Interview With Dr. Held

Mr. Holloway: Good afternoon, Dr. Held; Just here to ask you a few questions.
The first thing we were wondering is what is the first step in identifying whether or not something is a skin cancer?
Dr. Held: Well it’s not always an easy diagnosis, and you can’t always tell. But for a layperson, I think anything that is growing or changing is probably suspicious enough to consider evaluation and possible biopsy.

Mr. Holloway: Dr. Held, how long have you being doing procedures such as Botox and facial fillers?
Dr. Held: I actually started doing Botox I think, in the 1980s when it first became available for that purpose, although it wasn’t actually formally approved by the FDA until much later. The fillers have come along slowly but surely when I did original research on collagen back in the very early 80’. And now we’ve moved into the hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane and Juvaderm.

Mr. Holloway: I see. Well, who would be a prime candidate for Botox?
Dr. Held: Botox works better in people who are under about 65, and don’t have firmly entrenched deep lines. Botox actually works by freezing the muscles and it allows the patient to not frown and deepen those lines. So in some ways, it’s actually more preventive.

Mr. Holloway: Dr. Held, what are the benefits of using facial fillers such as Restylane?
Dr. Held: Facial fillers can be used to contour the face, and fill in the deeper lines. It’s appropriate for the lower face where you have the lines along the nasolabial folds and in the perioral area in general. Probably the most rewarding procedure I do is bringing up the lines in the perioral region, and making people look less sad, more happy.

Mr. Holloway: Dr. Held, what is IPL Photofacial treatment? And also, who would be a prime candidate for this type of treatment?
Dr. Held: Well, there are multiple uses for the Intense Pulse Light therapies. I really think the best use is for facial redness. And our patients, who have a lot of dilated blood vessels and redness, really do respond beautifully to the IPL Treatments.

Mr. Holloway: Dr. Held, in layman’s terms, what would you say is the best SPF for a sunscreen?
Dr. Held: Well, there’s no one perfect sunscreen. No sunscreen, no matter how high the SPF, actually blocks everything; And it’s not all just in the number. The sunscreen needs to be coordinated with the patient’s skin type and their lifestyle for them.

Mr. Holloway: Interesting. Thank you very much.
